With a whole world to choose from the study tour group set about shortlisting potential sites to visit over several months prior to departure.

All tour participants were able to nominate sites and regions of potential interest. Group members were then tasked with researching nominated sites to ascertain their uniqueness and relevance to the objectives of the tour.

Through a series of workshops sites were progressively shortlisted and evaluated with travel logistics in mind.

In the end four European countries were chosen, with an optional Singapore stopover on the return journey.

The final countries were felt to each offer an unique insights into water and broader sustainability management which would have relevance to the Australian experience. These potential insights included:

  • Climate change adaptation (Netherlands)
  • Energy and water integration (Germany)
  • Water shortage and similar climatic issues (Spain)
  • Parallel governance arrangements and flood planning (United Kingdom)
  • Acute water security pressures (Singapore)

Within each country destinations were chosen to highlight specific technologies, projects, programs or collaborations.
